FAFSA for Graduate Students

You may recall the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from your time as an undergraduate. As a prospective graduate student, this application is still available to fund the education of eligible applicants. Be prepared knowing that your financial situation may have changed — perhaps you have dependents or you’re working full time — so we encourage you to prepare your documents ahead of time to account for those differences. UAF's school code is 001063. If you’re new to the FAFSA, be sure to read UAF's FAFSA guide for all the details relevant to sending your application.

Frequently Asked Questions about Graduate Aid

Here are the main considerations that can change your standing when applying for aid with the FAFSA as a prospective graduate student:

  • You may have full-time employment.
  • While as an undergraduate, you may have been your family’s dependent, but now you may have dependents of your own.
  • You may be filing as “married” rather than “single.”

These changes affect your eligibility as an applicant. You’re also welcome to reach out to the UAF Financial Aid Office with any questions you may have. The financial aid office is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Alaska time, Monday through Friday. Email uaf-financialaid@alaska.edu or call 907-474-7256.

Yes! We have many scholarships available for graduate students. Scholarships are made available through the UA Foundation, degree completion and travel grants. There are many scholarships available through UAF's scholarship application portal, as well.

There are a few deadlines to add to your calendar regarding the FAFSA:

  • The FAFSA typically opens October 1 each year for the following academic year (i.e., October 1, 2000, for academic year 2001-2002).
  • The FAFSA can be filed until June 30 of the academic year for which you’re applying (i.e., if you are applying in the winter of 2000, you have until the end of the academic year of 2002). We encourage you to apply as early as you can after the FAFSA opens, as the deadline for semester tuition is often before the end of this application period.

You can explore the financial aid FAQ for more answers to any questions pertaining to the FAFSA. The UAF Financial Aid Office is open 8 a.m-5 p.m. Alaska time Monday through Friday. Email uaf-financialaid@alaska.edu or call 907-474-7256.
