Upon receipt of your financial aid application(s), we award the maximum amount of federal student loans, grants and scholarships. If you need additional funding beyond the award offer, you may be eligible to apply for a PLUS loan, alternative loans or scholarships from a variety of agencies.

All students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for federal financial aid. Federal aid includes grants, work-study and low interest student loans. The priority deadline for UAF scholarships has passed, but we encourage you to complete the for any late applications.

The FAFSA is required in order to receive federal aid such as Pell Grant or federal student loans. It is also required for state aid in Alaska (Alaska Performance Scholarship, Alaska Education Grant) and for some scholarships. So even if you don't expect to receive Pell Grant and don't want to accept any loans, it is often a good idea to fill out the FAFSA.

Once your FAFSA is marked as "processed" at studentaid.gov, it may take a few days for UAF to receive a copy of the submission. If your FAFSA has been marked as processed for more than a week and you have not received a financial aid package, please reach out to our office.

In order to maintain your eligibility for financial aid, you will need to fill out a new FAFSA every academic year. The priority submission date is June 30.

Based on your FAFSA application information, the US Department of Education may have selected you for a process called verification. During verification, we may be required to collect the IRS Tax Return Transcript from the tax year of your financial aid application. All students selected for verification will be required to submit a Family Size Verification Worksheet (either or , depending on your status on the FAFSA).

If we are requesting your documents, please submit as soon as possible. The processing time for verifications can be up to 10 business days if we need to make corrections to your FAFSA application. You will need to submit your signed 1040 Tax Return Form or request your IRS Tax Return Transcript from for the year indicated on the FAFSA.

The US Department of Education requires students to provide parental information on the FAFSA unless they are 24 years of age, married, have dependents, are active duty military or veteran, or meet certain other criteria. The FAFSA will determine your status. If you are unable to provide parental information, please contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss your situation.

If you are classified as a dependent student and your parents refuse to fill out the FAFSA, you have the option of applying for Unsubsidized Loans only. Parent refusal to fill out the FAFSA, by itself, does not classify you as an independent student.

Please note that filling out the FAFSA does not obligate a parent to pay for a student's education. However, dependent students are unable to qualify for Pell Grant or Subsidized Loans without providing contributor information.

Students who are unable to contact their parents due to extenuating circumstances should to discuss their situation.

Depending on your answers on the FAFSA, you may be required to submit a or an . A financial aid advisor can help talk you through which form is appropriate for your situation.

The FAFSA required your tax information from two years prior and your marital status as of the day you file. You cannot update this information if it has changed. You can apply for a review by the Financial Aid Office by submitting a form and supporting documents. If approved, our office will make changes to your application and determine an award based on your current financial or marital status.

Students can check their eligibility for APS through the Returning students can view their eligibility for the coming award year during the summer. Incoming students will be able to view their eligibility in late August. UAF receives eligibility information in late August and is unable to view new APS students before that date.

The Alaska Education Grant (AEG) is a state funded grant program for students that show high financial need. The grant is available for Alaskan residents with the lowest Student Aid Index (SAI) , as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). 

The Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education (ACPE) awards Fall APS and AEG in early September. UAF receives information on awards soon afterward and posts directly to student accounts.

The UAF Financial Aid Office posts awards to student accounts as soon as we receive the information from ACPE (often during the first week of classes). Students will not have late fees assessed for the delay in state aid disbursements. 

The deadline to complete the FAFSA to apply for APS and AEG each award year is June 30. If you have missed this deadline, you should complete the as soon as possible to be considered for late awards.

Students who are awarded scholarships through the General Scholarship Application will receive an email notifying them of the award.

All scholarship checks should be mailed to the Financial Aid Office. Please make sure your name and student ID number are included in the memo field of the check or on an attached award letter. To guarantee that a scholarship gets posted before the deadline to pay fees, checks should be mailed before the start of the semester. Please allow 3 weeks for mail time and 5 business days for processing time.

There are a few reasons your scholarships might appear to change after packaging, including:

• Change in enrollment: Scholarships may be removed due to changes in enrollment (i.e., dropping or withdrawing from a class) which cause a student to no longer meet the scholarship conditions
• Overaward: If you receive scholarship funding exceeding your budget (Cost of Attendance), some scholarships or grants may need to be returned
• Restrictions on usage: Some scholarships (such as Nanook Pledge) are specific to certain expenses such as tuition and fees; if there are no remaining expenses to be covered due to overlap with other funding sources (e.g., tuition waivers), these scholarships may be reduced or cancelled
• Funding swaps: Certain UAF scholarships (such as Nanook Pledge) may have their funding source "swapped": the scholarship amount remains the same but is paid from another source for a semester or a year

The Pell Grant is prorated based on your enrollment status. The full award for the semester is only available for full-time students enrolled in 12 or more credits.

Your eligibility for Pell Grant is determined each year based on your FAFSA submission, which is used to calculate your "financial need." It is possible to qualify for Pell Grant some years and not others, especially if there have been fluctuations in your or your contributors' income.

If you or your contributor(s) have experienced a dramatic change in income since the tax year indicated on your FAFSA, you can submit a with corresponding documentation to request that this change be taken into consideration.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a federal grant offered on a limited basis to students with the lowest Student Aid Index (SAI), as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Loan amounts can change for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons at UAF are:

• Application had incorrect information: The US Department of Education sets yearly loan amounts based on your class standing. As you increase in standing, you are eligible for additional loan funds. We offer you loan amounts based on the degree and level information you provided on the FAFSA. As we process loans you accept, we review your status. If we need to update your status on your FAFSA (example: changing from Junior status to Sophomore status), your loan eligibility may be adjusted.
• We added scholarships to your account: There is a maximum amount of financial aid a student can receive. We award you the maximum amount of student loans you are eligible to receive at any given time. If you are award other financial aid (example: scholarships or graduate TA), we may need to reduce your loan offer. If you have expenses above and beyond the average student and would like to request an increase to the maximum amount of financial aid, please review and submit the .

The US Department of Education requires a 1% origination fee for Federal Direct Loans. This amount is automatically deducted from your loan at the time of disbursement.

Refunds are processed by the Office of the Bursar. You can sign up for direct deposit on for faster processing. Once you see your refund processed on your student bill, the funds will be in your bank account in 3-5 business days.

Your financial aid offer includes a breakdown of your Cost of Attendance, which is an estimate of your education-related expenses for your enrollment period. This is not a bill! We use this estimate to determine your financial aid budget.

The Bookstore Bundle program is designed to make accessing required course materials affordable and convenient for UAF students. For a flat fee of $20 per credit, the UAF Bookstore will rent to students all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes, digital materials, and e-books for the courses in which they are registered. Materials may be picked up in-store or shipped to the student.

Students are automatically enrolled in the Bookstore Bundle each semester, with the option to opt out of the program. For more details or to opt out of the Bookstore Bundle, please refer to the UAF Bookstore website.

Your eligibility for summer financial aid will be determined on an individual basis. After you register in summer courses, please submit a  to have your status reviewed. The UA Scholars award can be used in summer by full time students by special request. Most scholarships are not eligible for summer courses; however, you can apply for a summer-specific scholarship by filling out a .
