If you’re applying to college for the first time, you may see a lot of mentions of the FAFSA. This is an application that allows students to qualify for a university’s need-based funds to reduce the cost of tuition. The FAFSA opens each fall, a year before the academic year it covers, and remains open until June of that academic year. The school code for UAF is 001063.
UAF's Financial Aid Office is here to ensure you receive the aid you qualify for and maximize your savings at UAF.

Types of Federal Aid

Loans
Loans are a type of aid that must be repaid. A major source of assistance to meet full tuition costs, loans generally have long-term repayment schedules and lower interest rates.

Grants
Like scholarships, grants do not need to be repaid after graduation and can be used for most educational expenses. You may need to maintain good academic standing to keep a grant.

Federal Work-Study
A form of financial aid, federal work-study is funding that a student earns for work completed while in college. Federal work study is offered to students who show financial need and indicate interest on the FAFSA.
Pro Tip: File the FAFSA as Early as You Can
Filing the FAFSA early each year can help to maximize the amount of aid available to you, and give you access to more financial aid opportunities since some funding is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Early filing can also help you plan ahead and understand your options sooner!
