    Partnership developing lidar-based solution to maximize salmon hatchling survival

    March 12, 2024

    Thanks to a RISE-UP Seed Grant, researchers Michael Roddewig and Joseph Shaw, and community partner Tessa Frost are testing the efficacy of a drone-borne lidar system to predict plankton blooms conducive to salmon hatchling survival rates. If successful, the test will pave the way for the research team to access larger grants to develop the technology into a solution that hatcheries across Alaska and beyond may use to monitor plankton populations in real time.

    Center ICE supports two types of fellowships, and we are looking for applicants to apply for each of them for the spring 2024 semester. For graduate students interested in innovation, Center ICE offers an Innovation Fellowship. This fellowship partners with academic departments to combine a 10-hour fellowship with a 10-hour TA-ship through the interested students' department so that students can explore the world of innovation and gain hands-on experience working on innovative projects.

    Over the course of the last 12 weeks Alaska Center ICE and the UAF College of Business and Security Management (CBSM) Student Investment Fund (SIF) sent three students to the 2023 Alaska Angel Conference (AAC). The Alaska Angel Conference is a 12-week process of identifying, filtering, selecting, and managing a group angel investment. An angel investor is a private investor focused on financing small business ventures in exchange for equity. This year’s Alaska Angel Conference took 21 of Alaska’s best start-ups and 17 angel investors through the nuanced process of angel investing.

    Makerspace Student Success Showcased

    May 08, 2023

    Makerspace Students in the Engineering 101 lab class have been hard at work on their student-led projects this semester under the tutelage of Dr. Dustin Ray, mechanical engineering professor, and Tate Barhaug, Makerspace Manager and Teaching Assistant. The class takes place in the Makerspace with the intention of inspiring students to find creative and practical solutions to challenges. The student teams are first-year undergraduate students who are interested in problem solving, some of whom have declared a major in engineering.
